Obama: Government Should Provide Sex Education for Kindergarteners

by Francisco Gonzalez ~ August 25, 2008

At a Planned Parenthood conference in July 2007, Obama said that sex education for kindergarteners is “the right thing to do.” Obama believes that the state should be in the business of providing “age-appropriate sex education, science-based sex education in schools.” He would rather not leave this responsibility to a child’s family, even at that tender age when children are barely learning how to read and write.

In March of 2008, while on the campaign trail, Obama went on further about what we should teach our children as they progress through the government school system:

When it comes specifically to HIV/AIDS, the most important prevention is education, which should include — which should include abstinence education and teaching the children — teaching children, you know, that sex is not something casual. But it should also include — it should also include other, you know, information about contraception because, look, I’ve got two daughters. 9 years old and 6 years old. I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby. I don’t want them punished with an STD at the age of 16. You know, so it doesn’t make sense to not give them information.

While we can disagree about how our children should learn about sexual reproduction and the role of the state in passing on that education to children, this statement by Obama, combined with his other views on abortion, partial-birth abortion, and the protections granted to infants who survive abortion, provide a glimpse inside the mind of Senator Obama and his views about the dignity of life at its very infancy. Most Americans and people around the world joyfully welcome babies into their lives and I imagine Obama welcomed his two daughters with joy as well. But in this statement, Obama revealed his progressive views as he described these most innocent human beings as a “punishment,” and equated an unexpected child to an unexpected disease such as an STD.

By now, it ought to be easy to see where the nation’s most liberal senator stands on issues related to the family. To be precise, Barack Obama received a score of “absolutely zero” by the Family Research Council’s Family Action Voter’s Guide, which rates all congressional members’ voting records on family-related legislation. Upon the release of the Family Action Voter’s Guide, Family Research Council president Tony Perkins, cognizant of Barack Obama’s silver tongue, advised supporters of the family to look at the candidate’s records and past performances rather than to allow 30-second commercials to, “Tug at your heart strings.”
